Visual merchandising: make every square foot sell

Your rent is charged per square foot, but most stores let a third of theirs sell nothing. Merchandising is how you turn floor space into your silent, hardest-working salesperson.

Walk into your store and divide the floor into three zones: the first three steps inside, the middle, and the back wall. Now be honest — where does your money actually get made, and where does stock quietly gather dust?

The entry zone is for arrival, not selling. Give customers three steps of breathing space to adjust; crowding the entrance with stacked cartons is the most common way stores turn people around at the door.

The right wall in a right-moving store — and the back wall in every store — is prime real estate. Your highest-margin, most-wanted categories belong there, lit well and displayed at eye level, where 'eye level is buy level' is not a slogan but arithmetic.

Height is money too. Shelves between knee and shoulder sell; shelves at the ankle store. Stack reserve stock low, keep gold at the eye, and rotate displays every fortnight so regulars always see something new.

Finally, merchandising is a language. Group by story, not just by brand: a festive table with matching accessories outsells three separate racks of the same items, because you have moved the customer from 'what should I buy?' to 'this is the occasion solved.'

One square foot, displayed with intent, can outearn five square feet of storage. Audit your floors the way you audit your books — every month, without sentiment.
